Hydrographic characteristics of the Mariovo area
The Mariovo region is mainly considered to be a dry area, with some few water sources. Divided into two parts of Crna River, which is the largest right tributary of Vardar River and when flowing here, it builds breathtaking gorge with high, steep banks decorated in fascinating landscape. It is as well considered to be one of the more significant energetic potential sources in the country. The watercourse of Crna River for the period of 1949/50- 1968/69 at the Rasimbegov Bridge showed average outflow of 28.4 m3/sec.
There are couple of more significant rivers that flow into Crna River, from its both sides: White River, Gradeshka, Satoka, Buturica, Lisichka River and Blashtica. All the above mentioned have a strait which moves within borders from 0.050 m3/sec. to 30 m2/sec.
The tributaries of Crna River with a greater water pressure come from the right side, where there are higher mountains, as Nidze and Kozjak, while on the left side are the rivers that spring up from the Selecka Mountain, which is relatively lower and there are smaller drainage basins. From that side, Crna River welcomes many smaller and bigger rivers of the entrances of the villages like Brnik, where the Brnik waterfall is a real attraction, from Rapesh and Makovo, then the village Chanishte where the Krushevichka River flows, continuing with Lisichka River from the village Dunje, which is formed by smaller rivers like Kokre, Kalen, Peshtani, Dunje and Veprchani.
All these watercourses come from the drainage basins of Selechka Mountain. Strolling down the Crna River, there are greater number of smaller watercourses which spring up from Drenska Mountain, where the most opulent, as well as the most attractive are the two greater watercourses with short flow from the Podot locality, meaning the Gudjakovski Springs, which are connected and many numerous legends for the past watermills, just as for a certain fulling mill, which used to function on those waters in some distant time.
From the right side of Crna River, one has to mention the spring of the village Manastir, and there is a legend that says it comes from the Aegean Sea, just as some other springs like “Bren”, at the “St. Elijah” Monastery, village Gradeshnica, which spiritually enriches the legend connected to the conquering of the Peshta Fortress.
In the Mariovo region, there are 74 springs registered, with a total outflow of 91.24 l/sec., and 64 of them have outflow of 1 l/sec. Especially important are the springs of mineral water near the villages of Manastir, Kokre, Dunje and Vitolishte (Mariovo near Prilep), as well as the village of Mrezichko, Mariovo near Kavadarci and others. It should be specially emphasized about the existence of springs with warm water or warm springs in the vicinity of the Allchar Mine, village Majdan.
